Date: February 8, 2024
Time: 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM MST
Event Description:
Howasteya Oyuspapi: Capturing Their Good Voices was created with the goal of documenting and preserving elders’ wisdom, cultural knowledge, and experiences.

Students from Black Hills State University’s Center for American Indian Studies, alongside CAIS Director Dr. Urla Marcus and American Indian Studies instructor Dr. Rosie Sprague will host a conversation about their new documentary, Howasteya Oyuspapi: Capturing Their Good Voices. The documentary was produced in 2022 and helps preserve elders’ cultural knowledge for future generations.
Marcus and Sprague put together a team of work study students to conduct the camera work, editing and interviews for the documentary. The team traveled across South Dakota to complete interviews with six elders: John Eagle Shield, Sr. (Hunkpapa Lakota/Standing Rock Sioux Tribe), Duane Hollow Horn Bear (Sicangu Lakota/Rosebud Sioux Tribe), Jerome Kills Small (Oglala Lakota/Oglala Sioux Tribe), A. Gay Kingman (Lakota/Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe), Faith Spotted Eagle (Ihanktonwan/Oceti Sakowin), and Beverly Stabber Warne (Oglala Lakota/Oglala Sioux Tribe).
The Deep Talks lecture series is sponsored by Crow Peak Brewing Company, Edward Jones Financial Advisor – Chris Mitchell and Charles & Jolene Lichtenwalner.
