Deadwood History, Inc. and the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission will host a series of summer camps for area youth. The Summer Camp Series kicks off with Archaeology Camp where campers are invited to assist a professional archaeologist at a real archaeological dig. This experiential camp will focus on site history and the importance of archaeology. Two sessions are available: June 14-18 or June 21-25, 2021, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Camp starts and concludes at the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center and archaeology work will be conducted at the Pearson family property. Archaeology Camp is for students going into grades 4-6 and the cost is $45 for members and $55 for non-members. A $15 non-refundable deposit is required for Archaeology Camp.
Discover dinosaurs, marine reptiles, and plants that populated South Dakota millions of years ago while also understanding what it takes to be a paleontologist. Paleontology Camp is for students going into grades 1-3. Campers will create their own dinosaurs, learn how fossils are formed, experience an excavation, and visit the Adams Museum’s one-of-a-kind plesiosaur. Paleontology Camp takes place at the Days of '76 Museum on July 12-14 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This camp is free to participants, but reservations are required and space is limited.
Students going into grades 1-3 can also join us for Time Traveler’s Camp to experience the different cultures that shaped Deadwood’s history. Learn about the Chinese immigrants that called Deadwood home, the European settlers that populated South Dakota, and the Native Americans that have been here since the beginning. Explore the traditions, foods, histories, languages, and more that each of these groups contributed to the history of Deadwood, the Black Hills, and South Dakota. Time Traveler’s Camp is July 19-21 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Days of ’76 Museum. This camp is free to participants, but reservations are required and space is limited.
