The Tourism Director (TD) will have a passion for Lead - its history, businesses and tourism. The TD will invest in our community through building and developing the tourism programs (all seasons) at the Lead Area Chamber of Commerce and efforts inside the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center. The TD will report directly to the ED. 


The job is two fold: in the summer the TD will be focused on being part of the tour and concierge staff and in the off season will focus on planning, development and group sales. They will also assist with ad buys and finding creative ways to promote Lead and all we have to offer the visitor. The TD must have good managerial skills and know how to inspire and create a good group working atmosphere among the other seasonal staff. We are looking for a self starter and someone who wants to help us continue building great things in Lead!



  • Tourism: The TD will be the front person developing our tourism strategy along with the ED. This includes overseeing the creation of tour scripts, telling Lead’s story and engaging with the visitor. Attending all tourism and group sales related conferences. Finding new and creative ways to bring people to Lead.

  • Management: TD will manage all seasonal staff, including scheduling, leading staff meetings and making the tours a success.

  • Visit Lead Membership: The TD will assist the Membership Director (MD) with pitching and selling Visit Lead memberships and al la carte ad buys.

  • Events: The Chamber plans many events during the year and the TD will work closely with the ED and MD to assist with planning, execution and hosting of these events including but not limited to Gold Camp Jubilee (over the 4th of July holiday), Fall in Love with Lead (September) and Winterfest (normally at the end of January/beginning of February, as well as various smaller events. The TD is also invited to pitch new events that might bring people to town in shoulder seasons.

  • The TD will also assist as needed with our larger goals as part of the chamber. There may be other duties as assigned by the ED. 

  • The TD will have weekly meetings one on one with the ED as well as a weekly meeting with the rest of the admin staff. The TD will prepare a report of activities for the ED in preparation for the monthly board meeting. The TD will report directly to the ED.

  • Proven experience managing staff

  • Previous tourism experience a plus

  • A college degree is helpful but not required if equivalent work experience can be shown



  • Reliable transportation to and from work

  • Unwavering honesty and integrity

  • Ability to maintain a professional well groomed appearance

  • Always ready and willing to meet the public with a positive attitude and upbeat demeanor

  • Willingness to work within budgets, and meeting budget deadlines and goals

  • Weekend flexibility, including working major holidays and rotating shifts with the rest of the tourism staff.



Though we cannot require you to do anything when you are not at work, we hope that you understand that you are working in a public facing organization and for the public. What you say in your time at work and in your free time will and does reflect on our organization (particularly in a small town) and we hope that you will keep this in mind when you are both online or out and about. 



Hours: 30-40 schedule to be set by Executive Director (ED) and employee + various special events including all summer holidays. During the summer hours the TD is expected to rotate weekends (or some equivalent arrangement) with the rest of the tour staff. We also expect the TD to go to several tourism specific conferences each year - dates TBD.

Pay: DOE

Benefits: We do not offer benefits, though we attempt to make up for that in a certain amount of flexibility and other various perks as available.
